Waukegan Harbor Sail August 8, 2015

Cake NWSA40thSMThis Sail was associated with the NWSA 40th Anniversary Party and there was a good response indicating some 35 members and 7 boats would participate. Unfortunately, bad weather conditions Thursday on the Lake prevented 2 of the boats from sailing to Waukegan for the sail. Faced with more crew than the remaining 5 boats could accommodate, several of our members volunteered to forgo the sail so that others could participate.

My thanks to Peggy Draver, Larry Hagemann, Ty Lyles, Ardell Kidwell and Art Noel for this generous gesture. Peggy and Larry arrived early at the Buell home to assist Jan Buell and Asayo Horibe in preparations for the party. The 5 available boat skippers also accepted more crew than usual to accommodate those wanting to sail. The skippers and number accommodated were: Peter Schleck (8); Chuck Litgen (3); Hal Shanafield (8); George Anderson (5) and Don Buell (5).

Nature cooperated and all boats reported that the sail was very pleasant. Wind was sufficiently brisk for good sailing speed and was off the land resulting In comfortably smooth waters. The majority of those sailing attended the Anniversary Party , joined by many other members who were not able to sail that day. Many thanks to those who provided food and beverages for the party and to Bill Draver for a marathon grilling performance.

40 years ago a group of sailors formed the NWSA sailing club. It is hard to believe that many years have passed. According to the NWSA 2014 directory our oldest member in the club is Tony Campo who joined in 1976 and is a past commodore serving in 1982. We have several other members that have been in the club for a long time. The club has seen many changes since it's beginning in 1975 like boat equipment, improved sails, hull materials, radar,GPS, radar, etc.

It is time to celebrate the 40 years for our NWSA club. The celebration will be held during the Waukegan sail on Saturday, August 8, 2015. This will be the club's 40th anniversary sail with a picnic for the anniversary following the sail to be hosted by Don and Jan Buell at their home at 3264 Victoria Lane, Waukegan, IL. 60087.

The club will supply the meat (brats, chicken breasts and hamburgers), paper plates, plastic ware, napkins, condiments and a celebration cake. Each person attending should bring a dish to pass {hot or cold and no dessert), your drinks (beer, wine, soda, etc.) and a lawn chair.

There will be a sign-up sheet at the club meetings and on the NWSA website. We want to ensure we don't have too many of the same items. We also need each person wishing to attend to sign-up so the club knows how much and what kind of meat to purchase. You will also need to sign-up for the sail with the cruise captain Don Buell.

You may attend both the sail and the picnic or just one of them.
The NWSA board is still determining what the token to commemorate the 40th anniversary will be. More information will be shared soon on this.
