Boating in the News: NOAA Charts Coming to an End

NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey has announced plans to phase out completely its production of traditional paper charts over the next five years in favor of electronic vector charts based on digital data. The shift has been driven both by the need for cost savings and by the potential to provide more and better information on electronic charts. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is seeking public comment on ending production of traditional paper nautical charts. The transition to Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) set for 2025, and is already underway, but this does not mean the end of backup paper charts, and hopefully not the end of the navigational skills associated with traditional pilotage.
